Vacation

It's my week off and I've yet to have an actual day off, but I guess that's not going to happen for another, oh, 30 years. Anyway, I'm writing to keep my resolution but there's not much to say. I passed my classes, we spent a great weekend in VT just hanging and swimming, play group on Wednesday, excellent birth techniques conference today, lots of arts and crafts....I'll summarize our happenings next week...or the week after since the coming week promises to be just as busy. Anyway, we are all well and having a wonderful time having more time for each other. Hope you're having a great summer :)

My little model

Very busy, very stressful week. I finished up my semester and it wasn't a pretty push to the end. Still waiting for a grade on a final paper but I don't have high hopes for it. And like the rest of the country, it's miserably hot here. I was worried about Henri getting dehydrated since she prefers to spit her water instead of ingest it...until this morning when on a whim I spritzed a slice of lemon in her water and she drank 2 cups in a row. Yay for simple solutions! Of course she's taking advantage of my concern by eating unlimited popsicles, smoothies and yogurt drops.
I don't remember much about this past week except greeting each new day at midnight as I typed furiously away. We spent each afternoon in the pool and I have a tan (well, as much of one as I've ever had), and Henri has started biting my neck to show affection. Some other highlights of the week:
-A farewell picnic after church for the beloved K and D *sniff*
-Locking myself out of the house and having to drive allll the way back to Steve's work and then on the way back
-Getting the windshield smashed by a rock on the highway
-Getting windshield fixed by a very friendly guy who not only put back all my stickers, he also washed all the windows AND vacuumed out my whole car. This might be standard of care, but my car and I were in shock. Now I just need to wash the outside...
-2 hours H-free spent sipping coffee and working on a paper
-Attempting a 7-day diet that I knew was a bad idea and trying during finals week was especially bad. I cracked Wednesday evening after gaining 2lbs; pounded 2 ice cream bars, a bag of chips and some celery sticks. The next morning I'd lost 3 pounds. Go figure.
-A ripe tomato! Henri and I split it (unevenly; little piggie loves her tomatoes). I'd forgotten how amazing a garden fresh tomato can taste. Can't wait for more. Fortunately, all my plants have lots of buds so there's a chance it won't be long. The cucumber plants also have flowers, there are pea pods lengthening and I have baby peppers!!!!!!!!!! Gardens are just amazing. You say good morning to them every day and give them a drink and it doesn't look like anything is happening and then one day, BAM!, produce.

So, there were actually quite a few photos from this week, but my favorites were of H modeling some new (adorable) Crocs we were gifted. They're too large (maybe next year?) but she refused to take them off so I got a few photos  of her modeling them:
Scan the audience

and work it!

it's all in the eyes

yup, she loves them

Oh, unrelated to the Crocs, but H gets pretty upset if we don't let her "help" with chores. Along with laundry, dishes, sweeping and weeding, she's recently added mowing the lawn to her repertoire.
I have a long list of things to get done this "vacation" but tonight I'm just enjoying having the Boo asleep and control of the remote :) See you next week!

Healthy Cookies

Really! They are! I can justify anything I'm eating, but these cookies have nothing bad (or at least terrible) for you ingredients. I'm going to post the recipe the way I made it; the original can be found here.  I wasn't expecting too much from them, so there are no shots of the process, just the final product. I only made six out of this but they'll make a good breakfast with a glass of milk. As for the fruit I used, well, it was all I had on hand. No doubt cherries and raisins (and chocolate chunks!) would make it even better.

Preheat oven to 350F
Put parchment paper on baking sheet

In a large bowl, mix:
1/2 C chopped nuts (I used walnuts)
1 1/2 C oats
1 C Shredded coconut
1/4 C Almond Flour (same as almond meal, according to Siri)
1 C chopped dried fruit (I used prunes and ginger)
1tsp salt (I forgot this, but will certainly add next time)
1.5 tsp Cinnamon
0.5tsp Nutmeg (oooorrrr, just shake the spices in till it looks good. Not that I would ever bake like that, of course!)

In a small bowl mash together:
1 med ripe banana
1/4 C Coconut Oil
1 tsp Vanilla (or just splash some in)
1/2 Cish pureed winter squash (I didn't want to waste my bananas, and Henri no longer eats straight pureed veggies and I have a number of frozen portions of squash, and squash can be an egg substitute!)

Add to the dry bowl and stir well to combine. Put a cookie cutter on the sheet, spoon in the batter and press down, remove cutter. Like I said, I only made 6 large ones, but you can make as many as you'd like given the size of your cutters. I would imagine just rolling a ball of dough and flattening it would work fine too.
Anyway, pop in the oven and wait 20ish minutes. My oven runs cold, so I left them in 25 mins. Once the edges are brown, remove. Yum! Next up: Peanut Butter Chickpea Cookie Balls. What would we do without Pinterest??? (homework, probably....)

OK, a few more photos from earlier this week/weekend. Apple and HP continue their rivalry so only half of the pictures flipped the way I wanted them to. Not too much going on here. Some nice weather, some crummy weather. Some great days, some total meltdown days. One week left to the semester. I only need to take an exam, answer a bunch of reflection questions, post a findings summarization and respond to everyone elses....and write that pesky term paper. I've written Appendix A and am working on B, so I feel like it shouldn't be too bad. And the instructors have reached their limit of reading them and have requested they be no more than 20 pages; 15 is preferred. Yahoo!
The following are of us at the Aquarium, Public Gardens, Ogunquit, S's softball game, and puttering around at home. It just occurred to me that H still doesn't really drink anything (she prefers to spit it everywhere) and while she still nurses 5-6x/day, it's summer and she should probably be getting more liquid. Kale and mango smoothies continue to be a hit so tonight I switched out the juice for unsweetened almond milk. Tastes great, minimal calories, and I think there's some health benefits for H. More than juice, anyway. What I'm trying to say is, my daughter prefers to play with her beverages so I haven't turned hydration into a battle (which it would be). Instead, I'm tricking her with smoothies and cucumbers. That's all. Boring week :)
An evening snuggle with Rammy and a green smoothie snack

Dad's softball game

Sidewalk/driveway chalk. Yet another way to make a mess

Fish swimming sideways

H was enthralled

Making friends with the ducks

Oh this is frustrating. Cool shaded baby

She takes after me. I always give the ocean water a little lick to make sure it's still salty

Mama, Baby and Daddy feet (mine aren't really that big, a wave had already messed with it a bit. honest.)

Some pictures from today

We've been playing tourist and my camera and phone reflect that. Katie, my sister-in-law, is in town visiting for a few days so we've been dragging her about...because of my sense of direction she's probably had to walk a lot more than she was planning. But she's been a good sport and I think we're having fun :) We did Harvard on Thursday, Boston yesterday (Henri LOVED the Aquarium, I was surprised, but she was enthralled with the fish and was content to just watch them and point and squeal for their attention), and today we met up with the folks in Quechee for a little VT air. There's a nice Cabot's shop where we sample all the cheeses (and bought some for a later treat) and then we ate a picnic and looked at the Gorge and headed to King Arthur's for a few necessary and not-so-necessary items. Tomorrow after church I hope to stop by the Birth Center for their Family Day and then, fingers crossed, it's on to Maine! I have all our bathing suits laid out (you will NOT be seeing a picture of me in mine but it's rather adorable) and am strategizing outfit changes for Henri and such.
Yesterday is on my phone, but here's a few images from today:

Oh, this is from a few days ago. H is into all accessories

New health kick; kale and mango smoothies. So delicious, so not filling.

What it looks like mixed. Tastes like desert

Here's today! We all arrive and greet

Hello!

No picts, just an update

There's been a lot going on at the homestead these past few weeks. I've written about what I managed to snag on the camera, but there's been some personal stuff as well behind the scenes. So, a quick recap (and they're all good):
1) I'm off Coumadin! After a month of Lovenox injections, a year of pill-popping, three CT's, an MRI, multiple ultrasounds, countless finger pricks and blood draws and three specialists (plus my fantastic internist, really, I love him!) I have been cleared to, well, resume life. I'm still supposed to wear my stocking and when I get around to getting it fitted I will, but in the meantime I feel like a new person. Not that the meds has any side effects (other than bleeding easily) but psychologically I still felt like a patient, trapped at the whims of providers. To eat spinach with impunity has been a delight. There are many advantages to living in the Boston area and one of them is that when your MD decides he wants another opinion, he just calls up one of the foremost authority on anti coagulation and cardiac vasculature in North America (no kidding, I looked him up. Impressive resume!) and you get to see him in a few weeks.
2) I have a preceptor. I think. For a few months at least. Connie was my midwife during my pregnancy and was wonderful. I have no doubt that had she not been on vacation the week I was overdue things with Henri would have gone a lot differently. As it was, she came in as soon as she was back in town to check on us multiple times, she sat with us in the ER and helped with breastfeeding (which seemed pretty impossible with all the tubes and wires I had in me tying me down) and lobbied ferociously to get us a private room so H and S could stay 24/7. Due to prior obligations to other schools (Yale, argh!) she can only take me for a few months, but it's a start and I'm grateful to not have to sit out a semester at this point. I'm continuing to email and call and if you have any leads I'd appreciate you passing them along. I'm keeping VT as an option as well since I could live with my folks for a few months.
3) A huge thanks to everyone who filled out a survey! I'm still waiting for 2 physician ones to come from far away, but I got all my consumers completed and now it's just a matter of writing the paper. I haven't analysed the data carefully, but I was surprised by how many people said midwives and birth centers were a great idea but when it came to them personally, they wanted to use an OB in a high-risk hospital. It's a good thing these surveys were anonymous because I want to lecture and fill their inboxes with scientific surveys and beg with them to reconsider and not give in to the fear-mongering that the very powerful (and rich) medical society has campaigned for. OK, off my soapbox. For real, thanks for helping. I'm sorta excited to write this now :)
4) Sort of a brag but more a confession: I'm finally below pre-pregnancy weight. Hurray, only took 13 months. The bad thing is, I was 20lbs over wedding weight when I got pregnant, so that's the next goal. A classmate is a big inspiration to me, she's always posting videos about food and pictures of her 14mo guzzling green smoothies. I'd like to keep H as vegetarian as possible and I eat fairly close to it already (I hate handling chicken, it makes me to sick to eat it, and beef is just too expensive) unless we're out so I don't think it will make for many tweaks in our existing menus. What I am planning to add are more green smoothies and try juicing in earnest (also green veggies; fruit juice is just empty calories). Obviously dairy, seafood and eggs will continue on the table. All that being said, I'm starving at the moment and when I finish this I'm going to get a spoonful of Nutella. Moderation in everything.
5) We have warm water!!!!! Notice I didn't say "hot", but at least I can get under the shower without contracting hypothermia. I inherited asbestos coated nerve endings from my father so unless my skin's blistering I don't count it warm.Steve's been difficult to convince that we needed to increase the water temp. But he finally put it up to 140 (I've already started lobbying for 160) so I got to luxuriate for a few minutes today (next project: figuring out how to keep it hot for more than 127 seconds)
6) Henri and I have been conducting house experiments. S brought home a bunch of brochures from the city about being energy efficient, so I've been conducting all the tests they mention. For example, put 3 drops of blue food coloring in the toilet tank, don't flush, wait 10 mins. If no blue in the bowl, you're not leaking! (We're watertight). A bit offcolor, but once you do flush your toilet bowl water is blue for awhile and when you pee, it turns green! H had to check each time. Anyway, I now know to water our plants in the morning (4am is the recommended time, ha) and that our shower head aerates and is energy efficient.
OK, that's it. Next post will be back to the adorable happenings and picts of H (though right now she's boycotting naps and that's not so cute).

Gorgeous weather we've been having, eh? If the whole summer would be like this I'd be one very happy camper. Of course then Henri wouldn't be able to use her new pool...As usual, lots going on but none of it earth-shattering. Classwork is entering the "just get it done" phase of the semester and it's mostly a bunch of little things, a big exam....and a term paper to start and complete. But it seems doable. Thank you to all who filled out my surveys! I think I need two more but they've been promised me on Sunday. Also, a dear doctor who really doesn't know me is not only filling out a survey, he's recruiting others for it. Just lots of little details falling in place in ways that keep reminding me I don't need to be fretting; God's got it under control. Another example? After deferring for a year, finagling childcare, panicking about fitting in pumping, dreading being gone for a whole day from H, I called this afternoon and have been dismissed from jury duty! Of course now I can start to worry that I'll be called for November and it'll be Whitey's case.
While it gives me fits to try to transfer photos over, I do appreciate having my phone camera or I'd have no idea what happened this past week. A quick flip through reminds me that:

-Henri ate another unripe tomato. I'm down to three struggling for survival
-Our fears H would not like her kitchen were unfounded. She's constantly making something, or at least carrying the pots and utensils around
-With warm weather H is no longer in onesies under everything and is very excited to explore/show off her belly to everyone. She's also learning to undress herself
-A Chik-fil-a date in which H ate raw broccoli
-A wee bit more unpacking accomplished. There needs to be some major progress made soon as Katie and Baby T are coming to visit us this week!!!
-A walk around the park in Cambridge for Memorial Day followed by a relaxed supper with our dear (ex)neighbors
-A cat is keeping a close eye on the chipmunk population for me. I appreciate it since they've already dug a hole in my lawn
-Mowing said lawn (it's still fun) and puttering with our plants
-A package for H came from Guam! Thanks, Aunt Whoo-hoo! H was, and continues to be, in love with the farm magnets. I have always hated anything on my fridge and right now it's covered with stuff but it makes H happy...
-H took a pretty nasty fall at church on Wednesday onto cement. She recovered her spirits quickly but looks dreadful and I'm so worried it'll scar; anyone know a way to ensure it won't? I've been applying neosporin twice a day to it
-People are shallow (and so am I for caring). Normally I can't get through a shopping trip without a nice older person stopping us every aisle to coo and try to touch. Thursday, not a soul would make eye contact. H was really sad and it broke my heart to see her wave so enthusiastically and be ignored. Guess she'll need to learn that not everyone finds her irresistible. Still, a little assurance she is still adorable would have been nice.
-I assuaged my mommy-guilt by taking full advantage of the wonderful clothing sales Target was having. Not that she needed it, but I've again doubled my daughters wardrobe (in defense, I did get a lot of stuff for next year. And the fact that she's still in 6mo stuff means it will all get lots of wear)
-H got a new pool and broke in her bathing suit.

Whew, sorry that was a lot of nothing. Enjoyed a walk with a friend this afternoon and lunch at Wrappros (yay for the Lebanese!) and we wandered Moody St tonight (seedy). H is giving Steve and I so much joy lately. She's really testing boundaries and trying to figure out this whole language thing, but she's also showing her sense of humor (it's pretty funny what she finds funny) and being loving, and well, she's just FUN. I like this age, she can stay at it for awhile :)
OK, a few picts to support the claims (in no particular order):
She wouldn't open it herself, but she knows that packages hold good things and she wanted me to open it asap!

Plunked herself down and read through the whole book herself with close inspection of her favorite pages (puppy, duck and horse)

Farm magnets. They really are a lot of fun, H seems close to the turkey for some reason

Dad liked the book, too
